Ripple (XRP) is a peer-to-peer crypto-currency designed to work seamlessly on the Internet so that payments can be sent quickly, directly and securely on the web. Ripple is a gross settlement system (RTGS), a currency exchange system and a system for cash transfer. Ripple’s (RTXP) transaction protocol or Ripple protocol is another name.

It is based on an open Internet protocol, a consensus ledger and a separate currency called XRP. Ripple was released in 2012 and is meant to allow global financial transactions of all sizes to be “safe, immediate and almost free with no chargeback.” It supports fiat currency tokens, cryptocurrencies, commodities or any other value unit, like the frequent flying miles or mobile minutes.

In 2004, Ryan Fugger, a Web developer in Vancouver, Canada, initially introduced Ripple. Fugger started to develop Ripplepay as a financial service in 2005 to provide members of an online community with secure payment options via a global grid. This protocol led to the emergence in May 2011 of a new digital currency system for which the own XRP cryptocurrency had been produced. This resulted in Jed McCaleb’s development in 2011 of a new Ripple system. It was intended to eliminate the reliance of Bitcoin on centralized exchanges, use less electricity than Bitcoin and perform far faster transactions than Bitcoin.

Ripple Protocol was launched in 2012 with the primary goal of ensuring that global financial transactions of any size are secure, instant and almost free without charge.
